Apple Macs on Everest

Check out National Geographic’s article on the video editing system used by an Everest expediiton to send daily 3 minute dispatches from the summit. 2 macbook pros, lacie rugged drives and a sony camera were rigged up to transfer videos and photos, all powered by solar energy. It’s great to see that the same technology we are using for holiday videos and snowboard clips is just as viable up there @ Basecamp. Good thing they chose Macs. You wouldn’t want to encounter the blue screen of death (does this still happen?) up there.

Apps We Like: Paper Toss

Paper Toss by Backflip Studios simulates the challenging office skill of tossing balls of paper into the bin. Using the iPod/ iPhone’s touch interface, you flick the screen to send paper balls careening towards your objective – the red bin. Each toss is affected by the office fan which pops up in different spots, so you have to account for both wind speed and direction. As your skill improves, pick a higher dificulty level and roll your Herman Miller Aeron back a couple of feet to increase the distance.

The graphics deserve a mention. Your offices is rendered in gorgrous detail from the stock blue office carpet, to the windows XP wallpaper on the PC. And the audio is worth putting on your headphones for. An ambient loop of typing clicks, office fans and monotonous office sounds will have you cringing before long. lob a stray ball into someone’s cubicle and hear them complain. But sink one in the bin and take in the Applause.

5 out of 5 for time wasting value. It’s FREE.. So get paper toss and get your score up on the blackboard.

The iPhone 3GS

Apple has just announced the iPhone 3Gs “the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet.”. Until the next product cycle commences anyway. The new iPhone will be 2x faster than the iPhone 3G when surfing and loading apps. Looking cosmetically the same on the outside, the new phone does come wiht a slew of new features under the hood. Of note are the improved 3D support – more games. A new 3 megapixel camera which is video capapble – Let nothing ever go uncaptured. Voice control, which will no doubt be used in some amazing apps. “Computer, read email” or “Computer, find me the nearest toilet”. Proper GPS like navigation which knows which direction you are facing. Again great for gaming. And last but definitely not least a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on the touch glass.

App: TouchGrind finger flicking goodness!

I remember when I was a little skater, yeah we are going back a long while. When we weren't skating on the streets, we were skating in our minds. When fingerboards came out, we transformed our classroom tables into skateparks, with textbooks acting as makeshift ramps and pencils as handrails.

Well technology has moved on, and so has the fingerboard. Touchgrind lets you relive all those tricks on your iPhone. Ollies, grinds, kickflips are all possible depending on teh dexterity of your fingers. It takes a little getting used to, but once you manage to pull a flip to railslide, you will be hooked.

Touchgrind makes ingenious use of the iPhone/ iPod's touchscreen to simulate the movements needed to execute tricks. If you skate, the movements will be intuitive.. Newbies can engage the tutorials for some practise before hitting the virtual skateparks.

Get Touchgrind .. no lecture/ meeting will be boring again.
